The Family Tree of Fiction

Please note: the following is not based on any scientific study. It is based on me having fun.

Basically, I see no reason why fiction shouldn’t have its own family tree. Various genres and subgenres can be grouped together and, conversely, separated from each other. Here is my own attempt at creating a fictonal geneology for fiction. Enjoy!





  1. Very nice! And there’s so much more branching to be done in all the little sub-categories. After some of the books I read in college, there might be some dispute about “coherent thought” being the root of all literature, though…

    • Hmm… I was trying to include the stories that predate written language, but you may have a point there! 😉
