Maybe the Universe has a Plan?

January 11, 2011

One of my favourite books is Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist, a deceptively simple tale about a boy and his search for treasure which delves deep into philosophy. It talks a lot about “Personal Legends,” which is a lot like Joseph Campbell’s “follow your bliss.” Basically, strive towards that which your heart truly desires as much as possible.

Now, there is one particular quotation from The Alchemist that has always resonated with me. “…when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.”

A few clarifications, though. When Coelho says “want,” I don’t think he means “wanting” the way a 6-year-old wants candy, or an adult wants the latest gadget. This is deeper, truer wanting: the desire of your heart. Also, note that the universe “helps” you. Just because you want something, it’s not going to be handed to you on a platter. You still have to make your own decisions about how you’re going to achieve it, and you’re the one that ultimately has to put in the work. Nevertheless, there is something comforting about the notion of the universe being on your side, rather than working against you.

A few days ago, I posted here that I had finished my novel, and that I wasn’t sure of the next step to take. I got many, many thoughtful, helpful, and supportive answers. The next day, I got an email about an SF reading happening… with a chance for 10 people to meet the authors for drinks beforehand. I took and chance and RSVP’d… and I’m now one of the 10.

What a perfectly-timed opportunity.

I don’t know if I believe in fate. I don’t know how much free will plays into our lives, and how much is based upon things that we cannot control.

Certainly, though, I believe in luck, along with the old saying, “The harder I work, the luckier I get.” And every time something like this happens, I find myself thinking back to Coelho and wondering…

Is “luck” just another word for the universe’s helping hand?

  1. Congratulations on this “lucky” achievement! (And, believe it or not, it is an achievement.)

  2. There’s a lot of misunderstanding regarding the “Law of Attraction”, but those who have put it to the test will usually admit that it works when done correctly. Keep riding it!

    • Very true. Sometimes the universe surprises you… I’m reminded of the time I fell in love with the musical “The Phantom of the Opera,” and expressed my disappointment that it had left our city about ten years prior. About a week afterwards, the news broke that it was returning as part of a national tour.

      Bizzare… but wonderful!

  3. Wow! Great opportunity! Fate? I believe in a peculiar kind of fate. Fate will provide opportunities, and it’s your responsibility to know what to do with it. Fate is based off choices, not just predestination.
I love the idea about striving for something, and to have the universe to help you on the way. I believe that it is that way. Good luck!

  4. Yay! When you know what you want . . . the path unfolds before you.

    Enjoy!

    • Thank you! It was an awesome evening… I still don’t know exactly what’s at the end of the path, but I know I’m enjoying the journey thus far!

  6. Loved the Alchemist, I’m so happy that it worked out that way, what a great way to start out! Hope you plan to let us know how it all goes.

  7. I believe in the saying, “The harder I work, the luckier I get” too. When you keep following your passion something is bound to work out. I look forward to hearing about your meeting with these authors.
